B.-P.’s Last Message to Scouts
My dear Scouts, If you have ever seen the play ‘Peter Pan’, you will remember how the Pirate Chief was always making his dying speech because he was afraid that possibly when the time came for him to die he might not have time to get it off his chest. It is much the same with me; and so, although I am not at this moment dying, I shall be doing so one of these days, and I want to send you a parting word of goodbye.
Remember, it is the last you will ever hear from me – so think it over.
I have had a most happy life, and I want each of you to have as happy a life too.
I believe God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness doesn’t come from being rich, nor merely from being successful in your career; nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so can enjoy life when you are men.
Nature Study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it: look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one.
But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little bit the better than you found it, and when your turn comes to die you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best.
‘Be Prepared’ in this way to live happy and to die happy and God help you to do it. Stick to your Scout Promise always – even after you have ceased to be a boy.

もし、あなたたちがピーター・パンのお芝居を見たことがあれば、海賊船の船長が死ぬときに遺言状を取りだす時間がないかもしれないことを心配して、いつも遺言を口にしていたことを覚えているでしょう。それは、私にとっても全く同じ事で、今すぐに死ぬわけではありませんが、その日も近いと思うので、みなさんにさようならの言葉を送っておきたい。
これが私からの最後の言葉になるので、覚えておいてよく考えて下さい。
私はとても幸せな人生を送りました。だから、あなたたちも私と同じように幸せな人生を送って欲しいと思います。
神さまは、私たちが幸せで楽しい人生を送るよう、この素晴らしい世界にお送り下さったのだと、私は信じています。幸せというものは、お金持ちになることや、仕事で成功することだけで、また、自分の思い通りにすることでなれるものでもありません。幸せになるための第一歩は、子どもの間に健康で強い身体を作っておくことです。そうすれば、世の中の役に立つことができ、大人になったときに人生を楽しむことができるようになります。
自然を注意深く観察すると、私たちが楽しめるように神さまがいかに美しいものや素晴らしいもので満ち満ちた世界をお作りになったかが分かるでしょう。自分が手にしたものに満足し、最善を尽くすことです。物事の暗い面を見るのではなく、明るい面を見るようにしましょう。
しかし、幸せになる本当の道は他の人たちを幸せにすることです。この世界をあなたたちが生まれてきたときよりもほんの少しでも良いものにして残すように努力しよう。そうすれば、死ぬときがきても、ともかく自分は無駄にすごすことはなく、最善を尽くしたと感じながら幸せに死ぬことができるでしょう。
幸せに生き、幸せに死ぬために、この幸せになる道に「いつも備えて」おきなさい。そして、大きくなってもあなたが立てたスカウトのちかいを守ることです。そうすれば、神さまはあなた方を助けて下さるだろう。
